ALOHA VISUALS by Alex Kilauano

As a native Hawaiian, my journey as an artist has been influenced by my heritage. I draw inspiration from the past, and capture present moments through the medium of visual storytelling. Whether I'm immersed in filmmaking, capturing moments through photography, or exploring the realm of mixed media graphic design, I find beauty in crafting narratives that transcend the surface.

My interest in filmmaking started with shooting skate videos with my friends in Kailua, O’ahu. At eighteen, I went to Santa Barbara City College, where I studied film history and film production. Later, I went on to California State University Long Beach, where I focused on cinematography and director of photography specializations. I graduated in 2014 with honors in film narrative. The day after graduation, I began an internship at Surfer Magazine and worked full time as the video director, until it was closed due to the pandemic in October 2020.

Join me on this journey of visual storytelling, where my passions of surfing collide with the artistry of the lens. Every click of the shutter, every roll of the film is an opportunity to transcend the ordinary and capture the essence of life's extraordinary stories.
